How long SMP lasts.

The short answer is years, and the longer answer is more useful: scalp micropigmentation softens the way hair does, it does not vanish, and what it looks like at year five depends almost entirely on how it was placed in the first month. Here is the whole arc.

The first month: healing

Each session leaves the impressions looking darker and slightly larger than they will settle. Over the first week the surface heals and sheds, and the impressions lighten to roughly their final value. This is why every result is built across a minimum of three sessions, ten to fourteen days apart: the second and third passes are layered over healed work, not fresh work, so the artist is building on what the skin actually kept.

By the end of the third session, healed, the field reads as a shaved scalp. That is the result you live with.

Years one to three: the settled result

Done correctly, this is the quiet period. The impressions hold their size and shape because they were placed at the depth that holds, in the papillary layer of the skin, rather than deeper where pigment migrates and blurs. The colour holds because it was mixed for your skin with a corrective additive, so it heals as the neutral tone of a follicle rather than drifting grey or blue. Most clients stop thinking about it here, which is the point.

Years three to five and beyond: softening

Skin renews continuously, and over several years the impressions soften. They do not spread, and they do not change colour; they simply become a little lighter, the way a few days of growth looks lighter than a week of it. On most heads this reads as natural. Plenty of clients prefer it.

Most clients never retouch it. The ones who do come back because they want to see it pop again, usually somewhere between four and seven years in. A refresh is a single session that restores the depth, and it is also the moment to adjust a hairline slightly as a face changes with age. Nothing about the original result is undone; the same work is brought back up to its first value.

What shortens it

Three things make SMP fade faster or age badly, and all three are avoidable at the time of treatment.

Depth. Placed too shallow, pigment exfoliates out with the skin within months. Placed too deep, it migrates and blurs into a smudge. There is one thin band where it stays put for years, and the work has to land there every time.

Colour. Plain black pigment on an uncorrected undertone does not fade so much as change: it drifts grey, then blue, and that drift is what most people mean when they say their SMP “faded badly”. A properly corrected mix stays the colour it healed.

Sun. Ultraviolet light breaks pigment down. A shaved head in Miami sun without protection will soften its SMP faster than the same head under a cap. Sunscreen on the scalp is the one piece of aftercare that changes the timeline.

What does not shorten it

Sweating, showering, swimming and shaving do nothing to healed SMP. You shave over it the way you would over stubble. Barbers do not notice it; that is how it is judged.

The practical version

Expect the result to look the same at year three as it did at month one, to soften gently after that, and to be refreshable in a single session whenever you decide you want the depth back. Expect the colour to stay yours. If it does not, that is a colour theory problem, and it is correctable.
