SMP aftercare, session by session.
By Steven “Stevey G” Greitzer · September 5, 2026
SMP aftercare is simple: for the first few days after each session keep the scalp dry, calm and out of the sun, and after that treat it like a shaved head you take a little care of. The impressions heal on their own, and your job is to not interrupt them. The routine is the same after each session, then eases once the final refinement has healed.
The first days after each session
The impressions are fresh and the skin around them is settling. For the first few days:
- No washing. Keep the scalp dry for the short period we give you at the session. No shampoo, no showers over the head, no wiping it down. Water on fresh work lifts pigment out before the skin has closed over it.
- No hard sweating. Skip the gym, running, saunas and steam rooms. Sweat is water with salt in it and does the same thing. A walk is fine; a workout is not.
- No sun. Keep the scalp out of direct sunlight entirely. A soft, clean hat outdoors is fine, worn loose so it does not rub.
- No picking. The impressions will feel slightly raised and then form a fine dry layer, and the layer needs leaving alone. Let it come away on its own, because picking it takes pigment with it.
- No products. Nothing goes on the scalp, no moisturiser, no oils, no hair products.
- Sleep clean. A fresh pillowcase for the first nights. Sleeping on your back helps if you can.
The same applies after every session. The second and third sessions are placed over healed work, and the new impressions need the same few quiet days the first ones did.
The first weeks
Once the short dry period is over, the scalp is washed gently, with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free wash, fingertips rather than nails, then patted dry with a clean towel rather than rubbed. Any light flaking that has not finished will come away in the wash on its own.
Once the surface has fully closed, a light fragrance-free moisturiser can go on once a day. It keeps the skin supple through the rest of the heal and helps the impressions settle evenly. Avoid anything with exfoliants, acids or alcohol in it.
Hats are fine throughout, and are the easiest way to keep the sun off. Choose something clean and soft and wear it loose.
Between sessions, keep doing this. The ten to fourteen days between sittings exist so the skin can show what it has kept before the next layer goes in, and we use that to plan the next pass in the method. Looking after the scalp makes it easier to assess the healed work.
After the final session
After the final refinement heals, aftercare becomes maintenance, and there is very little of it.
The one habit that matters is sunscreen on the scalp. Ultraviolet light softens pigment, and a shaved head takes the sun full on, so in Miami a high-factor sunscreen goes on the scalp on any day you will be outdoors, reapplied if you are out for long. New York gets less sun through the colder months, but your scalp still needs protection in summer. A hat does the same job. How long SMP lasts explains why this is the one piece of aftercare that changes the timeline.
The rest goes back to normal. Once healed, you shave over the impressions exactly as you would over stubble, with a razor, a foil shaver, clippers, whatever you use, and barbers are fine because they do not notice. Once the SMP has healed, you can return to the pool, the ocean, the gym and the sauna. A well-hydrated scalp looks better and holds its result better, so moisturise if you like, though it isn’t a requirement.
What is normal
Immediately after a session the impressions look darker and slightly larger than they will settle. This is expected, and it is why the work is built across a minimum of three sessions, including the final refinement: the second and third passes are placed over what the skin actually kept, not over the first day’s look.
Over the first week the surface heals and lightens. Light flaking is normal as the dry layer comes away. Some redness on the day of the session is normal and settles. Some impressions healing lighter than others is normal, and it is exactly what the next session is for. A client last summer texted us a photo on day three, convinced it had gone in too dark, and on day eight sent another of the head he had been hoping for. The result you judge is the healed result after the final session, not the look on day one of any of them.
What to call about
Call or text the studio at 844-936-2004 if anything does not fit the pattern above: swelling that increases rather than settles, warmth or soreness that gets worse over the days after a session rather than better, or anything that concerns you. Aftercare questions are always welcome, and a photograph sent to us tells most of the story. Anything beyond ordinary aftercare belongs with a doctor, and we will say so.
Before you start
Aftercare begins with the plan. At consultation you learn what the sessions involve, what the days after each one look like and how the result is built. The healing timeline takes you through those changes day by day. If you are still working out whether the treatment is for you, what SMP is is the place to begin. When you are ready, the consultation is free, online or at the Miami or New York studio, and you can ask for a quote to set one up.
What is the aftercare for scalp micropigmentation?
For the first few days after each session keep the scalp dry, calm and out of the sun: no washing, no hard sweating, no picking, no products, and sleep on a fresh pillowcase. After that, treat it like a shaved head you take a little care of. The routine is the same after every session.
How long after SMP can I shower and wash my hair?
Keep the scalp dry for the short period we give you at the session. Water on fresh work lifts pigment out before the skin has closed. After that, wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free wash, fingertips rather than nails, and pat dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing.
Can I wear a hat after SMP?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to keep the sun off. Choose something clean and soft and wear it loose so it does not rub against the fresh impressions. Hats are fine throughout the heal and between sessions, and a hat does the same job as sunscreen once the work has settled.
Do you need sunscreen after SMP?
Yes, and it is the one habit that matters long term. Ultraviolet light softens pigment and a shaved head takes the sun full on, so in Miami a high-factor sunscreen goes on the scalp on any day you will be outdoors, reapplied if you are out for long. New York needs the same through summer.
When should I call the studio after SMP?
Call or text us on 844-936-2004 if anything does not fit the normal pattern: swelling that increases rather than settles, warmth or soreness that gets worse over the days after a session, or anything that concerns you. A photograph tells most of the story. Anything beyond ordinary aftercare belongs with a doctor, and we will say so.
