The plain-English guide: what SMP is, how it works, what it treats, and what separates work that disappears from work that announces itself.
The Idea
Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is the practice of placing thousands of tiny pigment impressions into the scalp so they read as hair follicles. Done correctly, the result is a natural five o'clock shadow on a shaved head, or invisible density beneath thinning hair. It is pointillism performed on living skin: each dot means nothing; thirty thousand of them resolve into realism.
Thirty thousand is the working number, and it is often more. A scalp carries somewhere between eighty and a hundred and twenty thousand follicles, but the work is never a one-for-one replacement of all of them. The sides usually keep their own hair and are left alone. What gets built is the density the eye needs to read the pattern as growth, placed only where the pattern has broken down.
It camouflages the visible contrast created by male pattern baldness at every stage, thinning and diffuse loss, women's density loss, alopecia, and transplant or injury scars. It does not regrow hair or change the underlying condition; it removes the contrast that makes the loss read. No surgery and minimal downtime, with short-term aftercare around water, sweat, steam and sun, and occasional refreshes as pigment softens over the years.
A purpose-built machine deposits pigment at a precise, shallow depth: deep enough to stay, shallow enough to hold a crisp point. The result is built over three sessions, letting skin heal and settle between passes so density layers naturally. The result you live with is the healed one, weeks later, not the day-one one.
The difference is rarely effort; it's theory. Skin's own undertone shows through every healed impression, so pigment must be corrected for the person under it; otherwise it drifts grey, blue, or green as it settles. That correction framework, Modern Color Theory, was created by Stevey G and is now taught industry-wide. The other tell is the hairline: drawn too low, too sharp, or too young, it reads as work.
