How to choose an SMP artist.

Scalp micropigmentation is permanent enough that choosing the wrong artist is expensive twice: once for the work, and again for the correction. Here are the five questions that actually separate a safe pair of hands from a costly mistake, whatever city you’re in.

1. Ask for healed results, not fresh ones

Every artist’s work looks sharp the day it’s done. The only photographs that matter were taken weeks or months later, after the skin has settled. Healed work reveals whether the impressions stayed crisp, whether the color stayed true, and whether the hairline still looks like hair. If a portfolio is all same-day shots, you’re looking at marketing, not results. Ours is photographed healed, and labeled as such.

2. Ask how they choose pigment for your skin

This one question tells you almost everything. The wrong answer is a shrug and a house black. The right answer involves your undertone, the ratio of red, yellow and black your skin produces, and how the pigment is corrected so it heals neutral instead of drifting blue or green. If the artist can’t explain it, read what should be happening and keep looking.

3. Look hard at the hairline design

A great SMP result can be ruined by a hairline drawn too low, too straight, or too dark. It’s the single most visible decision in the whole treatment. Ask how they design for your face, your age, and how you’ll look in ten years, not just today. Softness and restraint age well; sharp, low and dense rarely does.

4. Understand the session structure

Quality SMP is built across three sessions, spaced for healing, so density layers naturally. Be wary of anyone promising a finished result in one marathon sitting: forced density heals dark and blurs early. A real plan tells you what happens in each session and why. That’s also how honest pricing works: quoted per scalp, for the whole plan.

5. Ask who actually does the work

In bigger shops, the person in the consultation isn’t always the person holding the machine. Ask directly. At our Miami and New York studios, every impression is placed personally by the artist who built the craft’s instruments; that’s the standard this whole practice is built around.
