The Journal, For Clients
SMP for women, in Miami and New York.

Scalp micropigmentation for women reduces the scalp showing through thinning hair without cutting it short. We place finer, softer impressions between your existing hairs, whether the thinning is along a widening part, across the crown, at the temples or in patches left by alopecia. Most SMP information is written for men with shaved heads, but this work is built differently from the first impression.
What the treatment does
Impressions are placed between your existing hairs, on the scalp itself, so the skin stops showing pale through the hair. Nothing is added to the hair; the contrast underneath it is removed. A part that showed a wide stripe of scalp becomes a narrow line again. A crown that showed through under bathroom light looks covered. The hair stays exactly as long as it is.
The impressions are finer than the ones we use on a shaved head, and the colour is softer, because they sit among real hair rather than standing in for it. We choose the mix from your skin and your hair colour before the first session, so it heals as a shadow of your own density and not as a scatter of dots. Once it has healed it disappears among the hair and stays that way. A client who came in last spring for her part told us at the third session that her hairdresser had been through it twice with a comb and said nothing.
Who it is for
A widening part is the most common reason women come in, and the one the treatment answers most cleanly. For diffuse thinning across the crown or top, we build density gradually across the area so your hair looks fuller.
At thinning temples or a receding line, we map where the hair has thinned and blend into the growth around it, leaving no visible seam. Postpartum loss that hasn’t fully returned is often concentrated at the front and part, and we treat it the same way.
For alopecia, from diffuse to patchy loss, SMP is one of the most effective non-surgical ways to restore the appearance of density. Where hair is fully absent in a patch, we discuss the plan at consultation; where it is thin, the treatment is the same as above.
Scars from surgery or injury can also be blended into the density around them. The scar camouflage page covers that work in more depth.
The treatment doesn’t grow hair. It reduces the visible scalp between the hairs you have, so they look fuller.
How it is built
We build the density across a minimum of three sessions, including the final refinement, spaced ten to fourteen days apart. The first session lays the base. The second is placed over healed work, once the skin has shown what it kept, and it’s in that second pass that the density stops looking applied and starts looking like yours. The third refines the line and the balance. Building gradually is what keeps the result soft, whereas forcing density in one sitting is how work ends up looking dark and drawn on.
Sessions take a few hours. There’s no downtime that shows, and you leave with your hair down. For the first days the scalp is treated gently, no washing for a short period, no sun, and after that nothing about your routine changes. You colour your hair, you swim, you sweat.
Miami and New York
The Miami studio is in Brickell, the New York studio in Chelsea, and the same artist works both. Every treatment is performed personally, so the artist you meet at consultation is the one treating you at session one.
In Miami, we also talk about sun exposure. Ultraviolet light softens pigment faster. A scalp under long hair is protected, but a widening part is not, so sunscreen along the part on beach days is the one piece of aftercare that changes the timeline, and it’s a small one. In New York the seasons do the protecting for you most of the year.
Clients fly in for both chairs. The sessions can be scheduled around travel, and the consultation can be done online first, with photographs, so the plan exists before you book a flight.
What it costs
Women’s density work is quoted the same way as all of our work: one price for the whole result, all sessions included, given in writing after a free consultation. What moves the number is the area treated and the density asked for. The Miami cost page and the New York cost page walk through it, and the quote simulator on each gives a realistic range before you talk to anyone.
How to start
Photographs of the part and the crown in daylight, sent ahead, tell most of the story. From there the consultation is free and private, online or at the Miami or New York studio, and you leave knowing what the result would look like, how it would be built and what it would cost. If you’d like to see how the work sits against longer hair before you get in touch, the SMP for women page shows it, and how long SMP lasts covers the years after.
Does SMP for women require shaving your head?
No. Scalp micropigmentation for women is built differently from the first impression. We place finer, softer impressions between your existing hairs, on the scalp itself, so the skin stops showing pale through the hair. Nothing is added to the hair and nothing is cut; the hair stays exactly as long as it is, and you leave with it down.
Can SMP help a widening part?
Yes, and it is the most common reason women come in. A part that showed a wide stripe of scalp becomes a narrow line again, because the contrast underneath the hair is removed rather than anything being added to it. We choose the mix from your skin and hair colour before the first session so it heals as a shadow of your own density.
Does SMP work for postpartum hair loss or alopecia?
It can. Postpartum loss that has not fully returned is often concentrated at the front and part, and we treat it the same way as any thinning, mapping where the hair has thinned and blending into the growth around it. For alopecia, from diffuse to patchy loss, SMP is one of the most effective non-surgical ways to restore the appearance of density.
How many sessions does SMP for women take?
We build the density across a minimum of three sessions, including the final refinement, spaced ten to fourteen days apart. The first lays the base, the second is placed over healed work, and the third refines the line and the balance. Building gradually keeps the result soft; forcing density in one sitting is how work ends up looking dark and drawn on.
Does the sun affect SMP under long hair?
Ultraviolet light softens pigment faster, which is why we talk about sun exposure in Miami. A scalp under long hair is protected, but a widening part is not, so sunscreen along the part on beach days is the one piece of aftercare that changes the timeline. Otherwise your routine does not change: you colour your hair, you swim, you sweat.
